The Nightmare Of Getting Content Removed From The Internet
Getting content removed from the internet is a nightmare – on both sides of the equation. On one side, there are people who abuse the system and try to submit fake court orders for removal and people who commit copyright infringement and use the DMCA to get the original content removed.
On the flip side, there are numerous issues convincing websites to remove content – including when you have a legitimate court order for the removal of content. There is a lack of communication and guidelines from webhosts that lawyers and courts can use to draft such order so that the host will comply. One of the problems is many times, the webhost representative processing these requests is merely a lay person following company protocol. Some websites, like The Dirty, are designed so that each post is submitted anonymously. Posts on these sites are nearly impossible to be removed, even by the person who allegedly submitted it.
And don’t get me started on the headaches that come with trying to get Google’s in-house legal team on the phone.
